I Don’t Know What Kind of Portrait I Want. Can You Help?
This is probably the most common question I get. And, yes, I can help.
Are you looking for something basic, run-of-the-mill? OK, I could do that for you, but let’s face it, you deserve more! I want to create something unique for you.
There are so many styles of photography, so many locations, so many looks. It can be really tough to decide on how to approach your portrait session. The fear is that you’ll spend time and money on an idea that really doesn’t suit you. But, hey, that’s why you’ve got me. I know it’s challenging, but I can help you turn this into something rewarding.
Here are some tips to get your mind working.
- Look to your favorite magazines. What styles jump out at you? Imagine yourself in the ads.
- Think of a great movie. Is there a scene or mood you want to recreate?
- What part of your personality do you most want to show off?
These are the silly questions perhaps, but these are the thoughts that run through my head when I’m planning your session. I give you more than a, “Say Cheese.” (Ick, I can’t believe I just said that.)
What Should I Wear to the Shoot?
As always, I’m here to help you, so ask me anything if you need help. Ultimately, it’s your responsibility to provide your own wardrobe unless you’ve made other arrangements with me prior to the shoot. It’s always a good idea to talk about your wardrobe choices beforehand.
Here’s a quick rundown of the high points…
Engagement Session. Whatever you’re comfortable wearing, seriously. It’s important that you are relaxed and not worrying about the new shoes you haven’t broken in or the $300 blouse you borrowed from your friend. (Really, does she have to throw it in your face that she paid full price?) Anyway, there are a few things to watch out for: no wild prints, nothing too of-the-minute style (don’t want to date yourself later), no ragged jeans (save them for yard work), and please no T-shirts. Oh, and a couple wearing the same outfit…yeah, that can be either cute, or (more often than not) not so cute. Having said all that, there’s room to break the rules if you have a killer idea for your shoot.
Portrait/Model Session. This is where your style drives so much of the shoot. After all, it’s about you, not me. OK, well, maybe it’s about me 20% of the time, but I can live with that. Because my sessions run an average of 90 minutes, it affords us ample time for you to run through 2 or 3 outfit changes. I recommend the magic three of business casual, fashionably casual, and the oh-my-gosh-this-is-the-funnest-outfit-ever outfits. Bring a rolling case or duffel bag so you have everything accessible. Pack 5-6 outfits so you have a couple choices with each change but not so many that you’re paralyzed with indecision.
Styles. Solid colors are generally best. Prints, strips, and other elaborate styles tend to distract the viewer from appreciating you.
Will You Provide Hair and Make-up?
I have some really good make-up artists and hair stylists that I’ve worked with in the past. Should you want this service, I can certainly schedule it for you. MUAs and stylists charge typically a day rate, which I will naturally add into your purchase price plus a 15% administrative fee. Of course, you’re free to reserve one on your own.
What If I’m Under 18?
You must bring a parent of guardian with you. They’re the only ones that can sign the model release for you.
